The Independent National Reconciliation Committee of Somalia (INRC) has called for the cessation of violence in the town of Beled Hawo in the south-western region of Gedo where armed confrontations have killed dozens of people in the past several weeks.

During an emergency meeting which was intended to encourage peace and reconciliation in the country, the INRC delivered the call urging the rival factions who fought in the town of Beled Hawo to resolve their differences at the negotiation table.

Key Somali lawmakers, officials from the Ministry of Interior and Federalism, and civil society groups attended the meeting which was held in the capital Mogadishu on Wednesday.

“We are calling for an urgent cessation of hostilities in Beled Hawo and we demand that unconditional cease fire must be in place soon” the INRC Chairman Ismail Moalim Muse said at the end of the meeting on Wednesday.

For his part Mr. Omar Mohamed Warsame, an official from the Ministry of Interior and Federalism told the meeting that his office was encouraging such meetings which mainly focus on the implementation of peace and reconciliation in the country.

The meeting comes as the latest fighting for the control of the small town claimed the lives of at least 6 people and wounded nearly 10 others on Tuesday.
