H.E. Mr. Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan, held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, on March 13th, 2014 in Tokyo during the President’s official working visit to Japan.

Prime Minister Abe showed his commitment to support the peace and nation building of Somalia by announcing a new package of assistance which amounts to 39.69 million US dollars in total. The assistance package, which will be implemented by 16 international organizations, was formulated according to the three pillars of Japan’s assistancepolicy to Somalia; namely, reinstating delivery of basic social services, strengthening capacity in public security, and vitalizing the economy.

In addition, Prime Minister Abe announced Japan’s decision to resume the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) in Somalia.

The GGP is a Japanese assistance scheme to assist local public authorities and NGOs in responding to various development needs in a prompt and complete manner.

The Prime Minister also expressed his determination to continue to support Somalia including its human resource development so that each and every Somali citizen will be benefited.

The new contribution brings Japan’s accumulative assistance to Somalia to 338.7 million US dollars since 2007.
