The Somali National Army and the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) troops on Monday (March 10th) launched attacks on al-Shabaab bases in Lower Shabelle, Somalia's Radio Dalsan reported.
The allied troops targeted militant bases in Bulo Marer and Qoryoley towns, killing at least nine al-Shabaab fighters, Lower Shabelle Governor Abdikadir Mohamed Nur Sidi said. Two AMISOM soldiers and two Somali soldiers were injured, according to Sidi, and two civilians were killed, Somalia's RBC Radio reported.
"We are planning to reach Barawe town by the end of this week," he said. AMISOM spokesman Colonel Ali Aden Humad said that further resistance from al-Shabaab was unlikely "because they have no power to counter the ongoing offensive". Allied forces have seized several strategic towns in south-western Somalia over the past week.
