Somali government forces have robbed and looted food assistance meant for vulnerable Somalis in the town of Janaale, in the lower Shabelle region south of the country, a Somali government commissioner confirmed to the media on Saturday.

The Janaale District Commissioner, Mohamed Idiris, said that the UN’s World Food Programme (WFP) was meant for hundreds of needy families in the town, adding that it was unfortunate to see forces looting the food aid while thousands of families in the town and surrounding villages require humanitarian assistance.

“Unfortunately, the Somali government forces have looted food aid meant for vulnerable individuals. There is no law and order here; the administration is powerless,” the district commissioner told the media on Saturday.

This is the first time that a Somali government official confirmed that government forces robbed food aid allocated for vulnerable individuals in the country. Somalia's Federal Government has yet to comment on the looting allegations.
