Thousands of people have been forced to flee from their homes in the middle shabele region after floods have swept away several villages along the river, Balcad district commissioner confirmed here on Tuesday.
In an interview with the VOA Somali service, the commissioner Mahmoud Mohamed Mahmoud (Saneey) said that the floods also destroyed very large farm lands and other properties adding that families who fled from their homes to escape from human casualties are now in need of shelters and food assistance.
He said the floods affected some of the most productive villages including: Jameeco, Xawaadleey, Yaaqle, Koorre, Mukay-Dheere and War-gaabo. All those villages are along the river.
