At least 8 people have been killed and more than a dozen others were also wounded in armed confrontations in villages near the city of Merka, the provincial capital of the Lower Shabelle region which is about 100 kilometres south of the capital Mogadishu.

The region’s deputy governor Abdullahi Muse Abukar who was interviewed by the VOA Somali service said that the fighting spread into seven villages in the region, accusing the Somali government of being responsible for the renewed clashes.

“Today’s fighting has affected the lives of hundreds of families who previously fled from their homes in the town of Qoryooley and surrounding villages” the deputy governor said.

Somalia’s ministry of defence was not yet available for comment on the accusations that it was responsible for instigating violence in the region.
