MOMBASA-- A Kenya-owned ship is stranded north of Mogadishu in the Indian Ocean because of mechanical problem, a regional maritime official confirmed on Thursday.
East Africa Coordinator of Seafarers’ Assistance Programmer (SAP) Andrew Mwangura said the 'MV Jamila' was sailing from Zanzibar to Mogadishu when it developed mechanic problem.
"We have received distress call that the vessel has drifted with crew member on board.
"Efforts are being made to contact the rescue center and owner of the vessel," Mwangurasaid.
The maritime official said the vessel that was loaded with cargo started to drift with unknown number of crew members on board
Mwangura said the vessel is currently held in Lower Shebelle some 70 kms from Mogadishu, an area suspected to be under the control of the 'al-Shabaab' militant group.
He said unconfirmed reports indicate that residents have so far started looting cargo in the vessel.
Kenya military spokesman Bogita Ongeri said they have not received information of any stranded ship so far.
