Two people have died when a landmine they were burying in the western outskirts of the central Somali city of Beleweyn went off  in mid last night, according to military officials in the city who were reached for comment by HOL on Saturday morning.

Somali army commander in the region Mohamed Amin said that the landmine blast only killed the two persons who were burying it, adding that the incident took place in the western outskirts of the city.

The area is one of the main gateways that thousands of rural people use daily to reach the city centre for shopping and other purposes. He said the men were members of Al Shabaab militants.

“It was a remote-controlled landmine and it killed those who wanted to bury it. They intended to cause casualties on the Somali people who use the area as their main gateway to the city” the regional army commander Mohamed Amin explained.

“We already had the information about the two men who got off a car in the same place which is just outside of the Howl-wadag neighbourhood west of the city” the commander noted.

It's not the first time that landmines has killed Al Shabaab militants . In the city of Beledweyn and other parts of the country, less experienced young men and boys are used to carry out operations.
