Somali president hopeful of talks with Somaliland bring about ‘United Somalia’

As the 3rd round of Somalia-Somaliland talks ended in Turkey this week, the president of Somalia Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud said today that he was very optimisitic that the face-to face talks between both sides will help foster the unity of Somalia.

With the continuation of the talks, the president said there were high hopes that such meetings will finally result in fruitful outcome adding that his government was doing its utmost to get Somalia united one day.

The next edition of the Somalia-Somaliland talks is expected in 90 days time, according to the agreement reached at the end of last round on January 19, 2014.

“The talks were previously held abroad, but what we are expecting is to host the the rest of the talks inside Somalia in the near future” Somali President Hassan Sheik Mahmoud said.

But the president did not disclose which city either Mogadishu or Hargeisa will host the talks in the future. 

Somaliland announced its independence from the rest of Somalia in May18, 1991 in the aftermath of the fall of Siyad Barre government. Despite enjoying relative peace and stability in comparison with the rest of Somalia,  the country has yet to recieve international recognition
