At least 10 people have been confirmed dead during fierce fighting between Somali government forces and Al Shabaab militia in the towns of Mahadaay and Buurane south central Somalia, residents and eye witnesses confirmed on Wednesday.

Residents said that in the aftermath of the hours-long battle, Al shabaab men have taken control of the two towns in the middle shabelle region, where Somali government has been trying to recapture areas still remaining in the hands of Al Shabaab fighters.

Those who died in the fighting were combatants from both sides, according to residents in the town of Mahadaay who were reached for comment by local media on Wednesday.

Eye witnesses said that heavily armed Al Shabaab fighters are now seen ever where in both towns as they completely took over the control of large areas, while Somali government forces have been pushed back after fierce fighting that lasted for several hours.

Al thabaab fighters withdrew from the area last year after Somali government consolidated its grip in surrounding villages in the middle shabelle region, but Al shabaab fighters who have been regrouping since then have recaptured both towns and are now in full control of the strategic towns which are located alongside the main road that links between south and north of the country.

Somali government military officials who were ousted from the region told the media that Al Shabaab fighters have caused more problems on local residents since they recaptured the areas. No word from AL Shabaab yet and so the region’s governor Abdi Jinow Alasow.
