NEW YORK, Jan. 3 (UPI) -- The United Nations Security Council condemned a "deplorable" attack by al-Shabaab militants that killed 11 people and wounded 40 in Mogadishu, Somalia.

The council issued a statement Thursday, a day after two bombs were set off in front of the Jazeera Hotel in the Somali capital in an attack for which al-Shabaab claimed responsibility.

The council said it would continue its efforts to bring greater peace and stability to Somalia and declared "that this, and other deplorable acts of terrorism, would not weaken [its] resolve to support the people of Somalia."

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon issued a statement through his spokesman expressing an urgency to support the Somali government in preventing future terror attacks.

"In this new year, the secretary-general strongly affirms his undeterred resolve to support the federal government of Somalia and the Somali people in strengthening state institutions and furthering peace and security," the statement said.
