MOGADISHU (HOL) — The Somali parliament is set to vote a no-confidence motion today against Prime Minister Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed.Unlike past parliamentary sessions, which ended prematurely due to disruption and chaos, the no-confidence motion was debated without incident on Thursday (Dec. 4).
The motion was tabled over a month ago by more than 140 lawmakers supporting President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, but parliament hasn’t been able to vote on it due to disruption by lawmakers supporting the prime minster.
Prime Minister Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed accused the presidency of organizing an illegal no-confidence motion against him, while 150 of Somalia’s 275 lawmakers accused Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed of incompetence.
The prime minister will be forced to resign if more than 50 percent of the lawmakers vote against him.
There’s growing concern that the ongoing political bickering between the president and prime minister could derail achieving the goals set out in the Vision 2016 strategy, including Somalia’s first democratic election since 1967.
