Kenya, Qatar ink four key agreements to enhance ties

NAIROBI-- Kenya and Qatar on Wednesday signed four agreements aimed at boosting bilateral ties between the two countries.

A statement from Kenya's presidency said the agreements which were signed during President Uhuru Kenyatta's state visit to Qatar range from energy generation, transport, agriculture and security.

"One of the agreements signed was on Economic, Commercial and Technical Cooperation and lays the foundation for cooperation between Kenya and Qatar in trade, industry, energy, agriculture, communication, transport, construction, labor and tourism," the statement said.

"Another one was on cooperation in the legal fields and provides for capacity building and exchange of technical assistance between the two countries' legal sectors."

According to the statement, Kenyatta and the Emir, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, also witnessed the signing of the agreement on avoidance of double taxation and prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to taxes on income.

"This agreement ensures that investors from the two countries will not be taxed both at home and in their country of investment, " the statement said.

The final agreement signed was on reciprocal promotion and protection of investment which guarantees that the rights and property of investors from Qatar and Kenya shall be protected by the host country in which the investments are located.

During the meeting, the Emir assured Kenyatta that Qatar was ready to work with Kenya as it moves to implement its the Vision 2030 flagship projects including the Lamu Port Southern Sudan- Ethiopia Transport (LAPSSET) Corridor.

The Emir said his government would also provide technical assistance and capacity building to the Kenya Ports Authority and Rift Valley Railways.

The two leaders also resolved to cooperate in defense and security, particularly in the stabilization of Somalia. The Emir said his Government would assist in the deradicalization of the youth in Kenya as part of its support to ongoing security initiatives in the country.

"We will also help in the provision of equipment and security gadgets as part of our contribution to the East African regional peace initiatives," the Emir said.
