Somali government claimed the arrest of two unnamed senior Al Shabab officials, deputy minister for internal security Ibrahim Isaq Yarow told the media here in Mogadishu on Tuesday.
The deputy minister said that the allied government forces and AU peacekeepers arrested the two senior Al Shabab officials during a joint security operations carried out in the town of Qoryoley which is about 100 kilometres south of the capital Mogadishu.
“The two arrested men are senior officials—one of them was the mastermind of 2009 terrorist attack on Halane compound” the deputy internal security minister told the media.
The 2009 Halane attack killed scores of people including Somali and AU military officials. AMISOM’s deputy commander in-chief was one of those killed in the attack.
He refused to disclose the name of the two senior Al Shabab officials, but confirmed that the arrested men were transferred to the AMISOM’s main compound at Halane neighbourhood south west of the capital Mogadishu.
