Somalia was re-admitted to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Monday (October 7th) at the opening of the IPU's 129th Assembly in Geneva.

"We welcome the Somali parliament to the IPU fold in a decision that acknowledges the progress Somalia has made in putting in place a functioning democracy," IPU President Abdulwahad Radi said in a press release. "It also reflects IPU's long history in helping post-conflict countries to rebuild and establish permanent democratic institutions."

Somalia's re-affiliation with the IPU comes after its parliament was established in August 2012 as part of the political transition process, following two decades of unrest in the country.

This is the fourth time Somalia has joined the IPU since 1963. Somalia left the organisation most recently in 2009 due to political instability.

The IPU "works for peace and co-operation among peoples and for the firm establishment of representative democracy", according to its mission statement. It was established in 1889.
