Thursday, November 21, 2013

Local Somali leaders are raising money for victims of a tropical storm in Somalia.
A cyclone killed 400 people and 100,000 livestock Sunday, Nov. 10, as it hit the Puntland region of the country, a flat and dry region that isn’t able to handle heavy rains, emergency crews say. Many villages were damaged or destroyed, and thousands of people have been displaced.
Many Somalis here in Minnesota have connections to the area hit and are now coming together to support the people affected.
Somali native and Minneapolis City Council member-elect Abdi Warsame is joining in to help along with Mayor-elect Betsy Hodges.
Donations to the relief effort will go to the Amoud Foundation. To donate, visit amoudfoundation.com/donate.html.
