The Somali government Monday (November 11th)
welcomed a Human Rights Watch report criticising the government's
response to an alleged gang rape in August by African Union Mission in
Somalia soldiers, saying the watchdog organisation and the government
are united in their intention to uphold human rights in Somalia.
"We appreciate the response of Human Rights Watch," a statement from the Office of the Prime Minister said. "However, we believe that the situation is more nuanced. We invite Human Rights Watch and other international organisations to support the Somali government in its effort to fight sexual violence and other human rights abuses."
"Practical steps have already been taken to put an end to sexual violence with government troops now receiving training on human rights and gender equality," the statement said. "The government will adopt any suitable recommendations made by the technical committee."
