AN ESCAPED terror suspect is suing the government over claims that they consented to his "detention and torture" when he was held in Somalia.

Mohammed Ahmed Mohamed, who has been linked with al-Qaida operations, escaped police on Friday after changing into a burka during a visit to a London mosque.

He and another man, only known as "CF", are claiming compensation from British authorities alleging they were involved in their "detention and torture" by Somali officials in 2011.

The High Court heard how Mr Mohamed will be suing the Foreign Office, the Home Office, the Ministry of Defence and the Attorney General.

A manhunt for Mr Mohamed, who had the right to keep his identity hidden lifted after his escape on Friday, currently includes teams from MI5 and the UK Border Force.

The 27-year-old has been linked to al-Qaida operations as well as Somali Islamist group al-Shabaab, the group that took responsibility for the Westgate mall attack in Kenya two months ago.

In his escape on Friday, Mr Mohamed used a 'sharp instrument' to break free from his electronic tag.

Another suspect involved in terrorism prevention and investigation measures (TPim), Ibrahim Magag ripped off his tag and escaped in a black taxi in December.

Mr Magag and Mr Mohamed are reportedly linked to one another with Mr Magag being suspected of terrorist activity in Somalia.

Yvette Cooper, the shadow Home Secretary, reportedly pinned their disappearance on Home Secretary Theresa May's decision-making.

Ms Cooper said: “Ibrahim Magag was previously relocated to the West Country. The Home Secretary's decision brought him back and he disappeared.

“Mohammed Ahmed Mohamed was previously relocated outside London and the Home Secretary's decision brought him back and he too has disappeared.

“Her policies brought these two terror suspects back into contact with their old networks, with people who could help them disappear and made it easier for these terror suspects to run off.”
