A decorated veteran of a 1993 battle in Mogadishu, Somalia, will speak at the Word of Life annual Memorial Day service.

Capt. Jeff Struecker, who as an Army Ranger sergeant was involved in a 17-hour firefight with Somalian militants while Army special forces tried to recover survivors of the now-famous helicopter crash known as Black Hawk Down, will speak at 11 a.m. May 27 at the organization’s Pottersville meeting center.

Struecker spent his final 10 years in the military serving as an Army chaplain, including multiple tours in the Mideast.

He has since written five books and serves as associate pastor at Calvary Baptist Church in Columbus, Ga.

Struecker acted as guest chaplain to the U.S. House of Representatives in July 2002, according to the Congressional Record of the 107th Congress.
