France on Thursday strongly condemned a terror attack against a UN target the previous day in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, where at least nine people were killed and many others wounded.

"This odious attack targeted the building that houses personnel and organs from the United Nations that are supplying humanitarian aid and development aid to the Somali population," a French Foreign Ministry statement pointed out.

France, a long-time supporter of Somali reconstruction and political development, has participated in training Somali security personnel in past years and has also been active in bolstering efforts to organise elections in that country over the past 12 months.

"We express our condolences to the relatives of the victims and (we express) our solidarity to the United Nations personnel as well as to the Somali authorities and people," the statement added.

France also praised the quick reaction and action of the Somali security forces and the African Union forces in countering the terrorist attack, which was ended one hour after it began.

French authorities once again said they would remain at the side of the Somali authorities in their fight against terrorism and efforts to assure security in the country and guarantee stability and reconstruction.
