Security forces in the Interim Jubba Administration (IJA) are holding journalist Aden Mohamed Salad in a detention centre in Kismayo after arresting him Sunday (December 22nd), UN-funded Radio Bar-Kulan reported.

Salad, who works for Somali National TV, was driving in Kismayo when IJA officers stopped his car and arrested him.

The IJA has not commented on his arrest.

Salad formerly ran the IJA's Radio Kismayo, and is among a group of journalists who wanted to launch an independent station, Radio Voice of Somalia, which IJA authorities shut down in mid-November.

"We condemn [Salad's arrest] in the strongest terms possible and call [on] the Jubbaland Administration for his unconditional release," Secretary General of the National Union of Somali Journalists Mohamed Ibrahim said. "We call upon the administration to respect the media freedoms and freedom of expression which is currently under threat and without which democratic societies cannot develop."
