Chaired by Nairobi County governor Evans Kidero, the 16-member team comprising of entrepreneurs, security experts and media practitioners is expected to advise on the immediate action and partnership between the government and the private sector in restoring businesses at the mall.
“By setting off this strategic process to restore Westgate Shopping Mall on a Public-Private Partnership model, we are loudly confirming the national government and county government’s commitment to enhance our investors’ confidence,” said Mr Kidero.
The committee will hold its meetings in public and will receive proposals from individuals and experts as well as engage with institutions with the necessary expertise.
Potential loss
The team would also identify the immediate actions needed by the government to safeguard on the potential loss of over 2,000 direct jobs that were affected by the attack.
Business at the Westgate mall came to a halt following September 21 terrorist attack that left about 70 people dead.
Prior to the attack, the mall was estimated to have been supporting an economic ecosystem valued at over $1.18 billion per year.
