A middle-aged male activist was shot dead by unknown assailants in Diani town, Kwale County on Wednesday evening.

Hamadi Boga, 36, described as “deeply religious” was shot in the neck at around 7:30pm by the assailants suspected to have used a motorbike to escape.

Police said Mr Boga had just walked out of a mosque before he was shot dead. The deceased is said to have been a close friend of the recently slain Muslim preacher Hassan Mwayuyu.

Family members however deny the alleged ties and say he had no extremist affiliations. Wednesday’s killing comes less than two weeks after Mr Mwayuyu, who was most wanted by police on terrorism claims, was gunned down at Tiwi.

The Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya (CIPK) South Coast branch are blaming the police on the spate of killings, insisting that Muslims are being targeted.

“It is the same month that another young man was killed and we see this as a hidden agenda by the police to target Muslim faithful,” said CIPK Chairperson Hamis Banda.

Sheikh Banda said a bad picture of the police was being painted and this will draw a major reaction from the Muslim community.
