According to the U-N, with nearly three-point-two million people in need of assistance, the humanitarian crisis in Somalia by far remains one of the largest in the world.

Now the international body is seeking an estimated $927.5 million in assistance in 2014 to address the protracted crisis in the war-torn East African nation. With an estimated 1.1 million people internally displaced and another million living as refuges, the UN now says that it needs to support Somalia from falling back into emergency.

In mid-20-11, Somalia suffered the worst famine in six decades. The U-N estimated that quarter a million Somalis lost their lives.

But now the international body says that the crisis level has fallen. Humanitarian experts say that despite the positive developments in Somalia more works should be done to consolidate gains.

They also warn that much of the progress remains fragile and can be thwarted by shocks related to climate, conflict and economy. The UN official cited the flooding in Somalia’s town of Jowhar as a good example.

The U-N also says that the requested funding limit is never met and consequently, fewer people were reached in 20-13 and thus the need for implementing long term programs to shore up resilience.
