Somali families in cyclone-hit Puntland get aid from QRC

DOHA:  Qatar Alliance for the Relief of the people of Somalia and Philippines has distributed food and non-food items to 1,000 Somali families in cyclone-hit Puntland as part the first phase of emergency relief.

The aid allocated to each family consists of 25kg of rice, 25kg of flour, 15kg of sugar, 6lt of cooking oil, 2.5kg of infant formula and 2kg of dates, as well as blankets, cookware sets and tarpaulin sheets. The Alliance, which is led by Qatar Red Crescent (QRC) has recently dispatched a delegation to Somalia to assess the needs of cyclone victims and determine the required support.

The delegation was received by the Somali Minister of Health, the Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, the Minister of Environment, and the Deputy Minister of Livestock, the President of the University of Mogadishu, prominent tribal leaders and representatives of several local NGOs.

The Minister of Interior, Abdullah Ahmed Jama, saluted Qatar and its people for standing by the victims of the cyclone and urged them to continue their support particularly in the field of rehabilitation. He also highlighted that income-generating projects would be the most important need during the next phase. The Qatar Relief Alliance has joint forces to mobilise relief efforts to 70,000 people affected by the cyclone at a cost of QR3.65m.

The “Immediate Relief Project for Cyclone-Affected Victims in Somalia” includes the distribution of essential food and non-food items such as rice, milk, oil and dates, as well as blankets tarpaulin sheets and basic medical services. Meanwhile, Aspire Zone Foundation (AZF) has made a financial contribution to QRC’s Somalia and Philippines campaign.

 Aspire Zone’s Acting President, Khaled Abdulla Al Sulaiteen, and Chairman of QRC, Dr Mohammed Ghanim Al Maadeed, met at the Aspire Zone headquarters where AZF handed over the contribution to provide relief to the victims of natural disasters.
