Somalia's first public consultation on human rights issues opened in Mogadishu on Sunday (April 28th), Somalia's RBC Radio reported.

Deputy Speaker of Parliament Jeylani Nur Ikar presided over the official opening, emphasising the need for parliament to improve human rights issues in the country.

Khadija Mohamed Diiriye, chairperson of the parliamentary committee on human rights and humanitarian affairs, which called for the meeting, said the goal was to better understand human rights violations and how to solve them.

Committee member Abdirahman Hosh Jibril said the consultation would hear citizen's views on human rights issues, including rape and gender-based violence, the rights of internally displaced people and violence against journalists.
