A Bungoma court has fined a truck driver, his turnboy and a Somali citizen on charges of human trafficking.

The three were arrested by police officers at the weekend along the Malaba-Bungoma highway heading to Uganda. The driver, Hussein Abifathar, and turnboy, Abdi Nurr, were fined Sh70,000 each after the court found them guilty of facilitating human trafficking.

They were ferrying a Somali citizen identified as Zarah Mohammed, 22, who was in the country without valid documents. She was fined Sh50,000 for being in the country illegally.

Police found the woman hiding in the cabin of the truck after a tip-off from the public.

Teso OCPD Elphas Korir thanked residents for their co-operation and said it was only through community policing that crime can be eliminated in the border town.

He further warned truck drivers against carrying people across the border as criminals may use this as an avenue for gaining entry into the country.
