The third annual One Young World Summit kicks off this evening in the host city of Pittsburgh, USA. Bringing together over 1300 delegates from over 180 countries worldwide.

One Young World is a global platform, which brings together young future leaders to address global issues and share solutions. It is one of the largest gatherings aside from the Olympics to bring together this many nations.

This year’s Somali flag bearer is One Young World’s own Community Liaison Executive and Social Media Manager Naima Mohamud Elmi.  Naima lives London, UK; she’s a student at Middlesex University.

In the past few years it has been great to see more young Somalis being active in creating positive change.  Somalia has been stigmatized and scrutinized in the media, which has formed a negative view of the Horn of Africa to the world. It is often said that the greatest asset to a country is its people and evidently the Somali youth have stepped up.  The ‘Teach Somali Campaign’ is a current example, which launched on July 1, 2012.  With youth from more than 6 cities from around the world working together to raise funds towards educating the youth back home.

Clearly there is a thirst for change among the youth regardless of which country they currently reside in. One Young World provides exposure on an international level, with keynote speeches from people such as the former US president, Bill Clinton. By attending this conference it would not only provide them with opportunities but also a global network with other Somali’s and even fellow Africans. It is time Somalia created a positive image showing its ability to prosper.
