Two blasts rocked Nairobi’s Eastleigh estate last night injuring several people among them the officer in charge of the local police station.
The victims had gathered at the scene after the first explosion at Muratina Road but were injured in a second blast that took place at the same spot.
Police had a week earlier warned the public to keep away from explosion scenes, saying they had intelligence that it was Al-Shabaab’s plan to lure crowds before carrying out secondary and bigger blast.
The injured policeman was among the crowd of area residents and police officers who had rushed to the spot in response to the initial blast. He is the officer commanding (OCS) the nearby Pangani police station.
Nairobi police boss Moses Ombati spoke to the Nation while heading to the scene of the accident and confirmed that two explosions had happened.
On Tuesday last week, police spokesman Eric Kiraithe released a list of precautions that the public should observe to stay safe from terror attacks.
Mr Ombati said that initial observation indicated that the explosives were Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and were detonated by remote control, possibly using mobile phones.
While cautioning the public, Mr Ombati referred to another explosion on September 30, in which nine-year-old Ian Mwangi was killed and nine other children injured at a local church, very close to the site of last evening’s blast.
The children were in a Sunday school class with the church’s compound.
