Muslim traders want Shabaab dealt with decisively

NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 3 – Members of the Somali business community in Nairobi are now urging the police to deal decisively with Al Shabaab militants and their sympathisers to avert further terrorist attacks in the country.

Led by their chairman Hassan Gullet, the traders said they are increasingly concerned at the recent attacks targeting churches, which they now fear may degenerate to hatred with Muslims.

“We are all ready to co-operate with the government in flushing out suspects and alert the security personnel of any suspicious action of terror. This is a matter for all the citizens to offer their full support the government,” Gullet said.

The members who addressed a press conference in Nairobi on Wednesday afternoon pledged to support government security forces in the war against terrorism.

The association deputy chairman Hussein Mohammed urged police to stop targeting Muslims or Somalis in the war against terrorism because there are non-Muslims who are Al Shabaab.

“Al Shabaab is a criminal gang all over. It could be a Muslim or it could be a non-Muslim. Therefore, the war should not target Muslims,” he said.

“We are not comfortable to see attacks every other time targeting innocent civilians. This must be stopped by the security agencies and we are going to support them fully,” they said.

The Muslim leaders who were accompanied by their Christian counterparts also condemned Sunday’s attack on St Polycarp ACK church where a child was killed and nine others.

“We seriously condemn those who executed the cowardly and heinous acts at the place of worship hosting innocent children and worshipers.”

“Those attacking churches know their agenda which is to cause disharmony between Christians and Muslims. We will not accept that to happen in the country and we are ready to do all we can to stop it.”

Nobody has been arrested over the Sunday church attack.
