UN signs MOU on human rights in Mogadishu

Somali Transitional Federal Government and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights have signed a Memorandum of Understanding and technical agreement on cooperation to assist Somalia in the area of human rights.


Somali Prime Minister Abdiweli Ali Mohamed said his government is committed to enhancing the capacity of its institutions for the promotion and protection of human rights while he noted that the ongoing constitutional process is in line with these principles. He also called on the international community to assist his administration in the rebuilding of the countries law institutions that collapsed during the decades-long civil war.

Officials from the UN Human Rights Council are challenging the current Somali administration to investigate human rights violation in Somalia. The official (official or officials) also called for more protection for journalists and more investigation into the murder of senior government officials.

The United Nations also say that lack of personnel, equipment, and infrastructure, and poor professional training make the judiciary in Somalia a virtually paralyzed entity.

The UN Independent Expert has also underlined the importance of disarmament, demobilization and reintegration of al-Shabaab fighters and called for the development of a legal and policy framework for operations by security forces, as well as solid governance, vetting and oversight mechanisms, in line with the UN Security Council Resolution 1910 of 2010.

United Nations Independent Expert team on the situation of human rights in Somalia is of the view that strengthening access to justice and rule of law in the country is crucial to protect and promote the fundamental rights of the Somali people.
