Somalia: Journalist Killed, This Is How Press Freedom Dies

Thursday, May 03, 2012

Even on the eve of World Press Freedom Day, which is marked today, the slaying of journalists and media workers continues in the Horn of Africa in an over two decade armed conflict. Unidentified gunmen last night opened fire against a reporter for Radio Daljir – Galkayo branch in Puntland, killing him on the spot.

Farhan Jemis Abdulle was shot on his way home shortly after leaving the offices of Radio Daljir. The gunmen fled the scene immediately.

The city of Galkayo, on the border between Puntland and the self-proclaimed Galmuduug region, over the past months has been theatre to an escalation of violence between clans and movements of different political orientation.

Farhan, who sadly becomes the fifth journalist to be murdered in Somalia this year, was investigating piracy and illegal activities along the Somali coasts. He leaves a wife and three children.
