Unknown gunmen kill reporter in central Somalia

Unknown gunmen have killed a local Somali radio reporter in Somali's central region of Mudug, Press TV reports.

Witnesses said assailants armed with pistols opened fire on Farhan Jemis Abdulle in Galkayo town located about 700 km (435 miles) northwest of the Somali capital Mogadishu.

According to his colleagues, the incident happened late on Wednesday.

"Farhan, a reporter for Radio Daljir, left the station around 9 p.m. local time to go to his home but was reportedly killed in the town," Ahmed Aden, a local journalist in Galkayo told Press TV.

No group or individual has yet claimed responsibility for the killing.

The incident came a month after three armed men shot Mahad Salad Aden, a reporter for Radio Shabelle, in central Somali town of Beledweyn.

At least five journalists, including Farhan, were killed in Somalia in 2012.

Somalia, which has not had a functioning government since 1991, is considered one of the most dangerous places in the world for journalists.

Reporters Without Borders (Reporteurs Sans Frontieres) reported in December 2011 that 25 Somali journalists had been killed in the country since 2007.
