Three police officers have been injured after an explosion hit their vehicle in Dagahaley, northern Kenya.

The policemen from the Dagahaley Police Station were escorting vehicles belonging to CARE International prior to the 11.35am incident within the Dadaab refugee camp.

“The officers have been taken to hospital and there could be more injuries because there were civilians around the area where the explosion occurred.

"The vehicle was extensively damaged,” said North Eastern province police boss Philip Tuimur.

Mr Tuimur said the assailants used an improvised explosive device (IED).

He said additional police officers have been dispatched to the area to start investigations and to track down those behind the attack.

Last month, a police officer was killed and three others seriously injured when explosive hit a police vehicle. The bomb had been planted on the road in Dagahaley township.

The Administration Police officers were escorting a group of UNHCR staff when an IED hit the vehicle.
