20 Somali permanent secretaries graduate at UMI

Uganda Management Institute (UMI) has passed out 20 permanent secretaries from the federal transitional government of Somalia.

The graduation was held at the institution’s main campus, in Kampala. Of these graduates, 19 are male and one female. They were awarded certificates in Financial Management and accountability.

The two weeks course which began on 2 July, 2012 was funded by the African Development Bank in a bid to rebuild the wrecked civil service of the Horn of Africa country.

The acting ambassador of Somalia to Uganda Musa Bashir challenged the permanent secretaries to immediately put the leadership and financial management skills they have acquired to practice back home in Somalia.

“The civil service of Somalia is broken down. You must use the skills you have just acquired here (UMI) to transform your respective ministries and subsequently rebuild the civil service.” Bashir said.

Harriet Adakun, the Public relations officer UMI said the training presented the best opportunity for the institution to help in rebuilding war ravaged Somalia.

“We have trained high profile government officials from Somalia before. Recently we also passed out commissioners from the country’s various ministries; we hope our efforts yield stability and recovery in Somalia,” Adakun said.

Aweis Habdad, permanent secretary ministry of labour, Social, Youth and sports of Somalia lauded UMI for institution’s efforts in rebuilding the capacity of Somalia’s Public service adding:

“With the skills we have attained in Uganda (UMI), we intend to establish our own management school to help our civil service deliver better services to the people of Somalia.” Habdad said.

The director general of UMI Dr.James L. Nkata pledged to support the government of Somalia in establishing their own management institute.

“As UMI, we shall be honored to help Somali build their own management school.” Nkata revealed.

Meanwhile UMI has also introduced five new post graduate courses. These include: Master in Public Administration, Masters in Business Administration, Masters in Higher Education Management, Masters in Public Procurement and, Masters in Institutional Management and Leadership.

The programmes target majorly top level managers in public and private sectors.
