Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has welcomed Kenya’s request for its defence forces to join African Union Mission in Somali (AMISOM).In a communiquÈ after a summit attended by Heads of State and Government, IGAD paid tribute to the Somali Transitional Federal Government (TFG), AMISON troops and Kenya for their continued sacrifices in pursuit of peace and security in Somali.
"The summit commends the military gains made by various forces towards defeating Al Shabaab and other extremist elements," read the communiquÈ in part.
The summit, which was held in Addis Ababa in Ethiopia and attended by president Mwai Kibaki, also urged the humanitarian agencies to encourage voluntary repatriation of refugees to the liberated areas by the Amisom and Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers in Somali.
Kenya hosts over 600,000 Somali refugees at the Daadab and Ifo camps and there have been concern over the security situation and proliferation of arms in the camps and the reparation can be a big relief for the country.
At the height of the Al Shabaab reign of terror in Somali the country was receiving an average of 1,000 refugees daily.
The summit urged TFG leadership to take advantage of the expanded security to various districts to enhance national reconciliation, consolidate political and administrative control in the newly liberated areas.
"TFG should promote inclusive political participation in line with the Djibouti peace process, Kampala accord and the road map further calls on the TFG to act fast and implement quick impact projects to motivate the people of Somalia to support peace and security efforts," added the communiquÈ.
Following the launch of operation Linda Nchi the KDF has liberated El Afe Fafadun, Busar, Inda El, Damasa in the Northern Sector while in the Central sector Dobley, Tabda, Bilisqokani, Hayo, Qatar, Delbio have been captured from the militia group and Southern Sector Ras Kamboni Burqabo and Kulbio.
