Puntland leader Abdirahman Mohamed Farole praised the continued political progress in Somalia in an address to a crowd of more than 15,000 people in Mire Aware Stadium in Garowe in honour of the Eid al-Fitr holiday Sunday (August 19th), Radio Garowe reported. Farole expressed gratitude to the Technical Selection Committee for their efforts in screening the nominees for the new federal parliament.
Puntland religious scholars also addressed the congregants, and condemned violence against civilians as contrary to the teachings of Islam.
Sheikh Ahmed Dahir warned the public about "violent groups who have come to Puntland to kill and destroy our people, our religious scholars [and] our government".
"The people must know that anyone who assists killers is equally guilty," Dahir said. "The government alone cannot work on building peace. Every person must help to build the peace in our land and among our communities."
