Government demands compensation for crashed choppers

Government is considering to demand the African Union and United Nations to compensate Uganda for the crashed chopper and lost soldiers.

This was revealed by the minister of state for Defense Jeje Odongo while briefing MPs on the chopper accident.

Jeje said that government is studying whether UN and AU should take responsibility of compensating since Uganda was helping them to keep peace in Somalia.

He denied claims that the crashed M1- 24 helicopters were junk saying they were in good condition and before they were flagged off for the operation they were inspected by the UN officials.

He briefed the MPs that the number of UPDF soldiers who perished in the chopper crash on Sunday has risen to three, with four more soldiers still unaccounted for.

The dead soldiers are Capt. William Letti, Lt. Nahamya Patrick and 2nd Lt. Richard Mushabe while 21 according to him are alive and well though some are still receiving treatment.

The committee tasked the minister together with his commander of Land Forces Lt. Gen. Katumba Wamala to reveal the names of the missing soldiers but they asked for more time.
