Somalia plans to build a national naval force to secure its territorial waters, Prime Minister Abdiweli Mohamed Ali announced Tuesday (July 31st).

"The Somali government wants to establish well-trained maritime forces that will be in charge of patrolling the coast and put a stop to foreign countries and companies taking Somalia's resources illegitimately," Ali said, Somalia's Shabelle Media Network reported. The government has sought foreign assistance to build a high-quality, capable marine force, he said.

Somalia has suffered from illegal fishing and toxic-waste dumping in its waters due to the absence of control over its coasts since the collapse of the central government in 1991.
