Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini called Friday for an international effort against piracy in Somalia, but he ruled out a western military action.
The call came following recent reports that a French warship had fired 20 missiles towards Somali territories.
Frattini urged the Somali transitional government to control the security situation in the country.
He said the situation in Somalia requires more international effort to put an end to piracy, which is rampant there.
But, he pointed out an effort to shore up the Somalia transitional government.
In this context, he said, Italy is playing a significant role in training Somali police and financing the operations of Somali security forces.
