The Islamic Republic of Iran is on the forefront in assisting the war ravaged Somali population who are suffering the worst drought in sixty years.

The United Nations estimates has declared famine in six regions of Somalia that has seen a high influx of Somali IDPs from the districts of Baidoa, Bay, Bakool, in the south and other regions of central Somalia with medical institutions reporting alarming number of deaths on a daily basis.

The Islamic Republic is currently managing seven camps in Mogadishu that houses thousands of displaced persons and are welcoming new arrivals who continue to flock into the city in search of a better livelihood.

A ship weighing 120 tones loaded with sugar, biscuits for malnourished children and cereals arrived today in Mogadishu with the aid set to be delivered to the IDPs in the Iranian Red Crescent managed camps.

Morteza Salimi, the head of the Iranian Red Crescent delegation in Somalia said that the Iranian people will be on the forefront in assisting the people of Somalia at such a critical time and the latest arrival of the ship is a clear sign that the Muslim country is assisting the Muslim counterparts in Somalia.

Iran has already dispatched a 5000 tonne ship loaded with massive aid and will dock soon at the Mogadishu seaport.

The U.N.'s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affair (OCHA) said Wednesday that more than 2.2 million Somalis have received food assistance, mostly in the famine-stricken south. However, the office said nearly two million others still urgently need aid.
