The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has two new suspects in an ongoing investigation by the Security Intelligence Service (SUPO) into suspected helping to finance terrorist activities.

The two males are of Somali background and live abroad. Both of them have lived in Finland on a long-term basis, and one of them has Finnish citizenship.

The head of the investigation, Detective Inspector Jaakko Christensen, says that the police know where the suspects are and have been in contact with them.

“They will be questioned during the preliminary investigation”, Christensen says.

He would not say if the suspects were arrested or remanded in the country where they now are.

One of the suspects was the target of a fruitless house search in the Helsinki region on Wednesday of last week. However, he is not believed to have left the country to flee investigators Of the two earlier suspects, a 34-year-old man suspected of financing and recruiting on behalf of terrorism is still in custody.

A 28-year-old Vantaa woman suspected of financing terrorism was released on Friday.

Christensen says that all four suspects in the case are in contact with each other.

Police suspect that they have sent money to the Islamist organisation al-Shabbab, which is fighting against the provisional government of Somalia.

The suspected sums of money that have been sent are believed to be small.
