Sikh Youth Calgary is hosting Flair4Famine to raise funds for the Red Cross to provide famine relief in Somalia with emergency supplies, clean water, food and health clinics.
Sikh Youth Calgary organizer Jessie Singh says the group aims to raise $10,000 at the fun-filled event for the serious situation.
"We wanted to do something that was entertaining and give a big hit," she says. "We are having two fashion shows - the Bollywood theme is the first and the African theme is second."
Calgary designer Amam Dhalay's Bollywoodinspired fashions will be showcased on the runway.
And with the focus on aid to Somalia, keeping that part of the world top of mind is important.
"We wanted to show what's going on in African clothing. It's so colourful," Singh says.
The evening will also include singing, dance performances, Basi's Lions Den Kickboxing and drum performances.
Flair4Famine runs tonight at the Polish Community Centre, 3015 15th St. N.E., from 5 to 9 p.m. Tickets are $25 and available at the door. www.sikhyc.com.
Brain cancer survivor Alyson Woloshyn is hosting a Grey Matters fundraiser for brain cancer research and the Alberta Cancer Foundation. She was diagnosed more than two years ago with a glioblastoma, a malignant and incurable form of brain cancer. Treatment that was researched and developed in Alberta 10 years ago has bought her extra time - four times longer than if the research hadn't been done. Woloshyn and her oncologist, Dr. Jay Easau of the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, will be speaking at the event, and a silent auction will help raise funds. Grey Matters takes place Thursday from 7 to 11 p.m. at Tilted Grill, 1800 4th St. S.W. Tickets are by donation at the door. alysonwoloshyn.com/ greymatters

Holiday Retirement's 34 Canadian communities are aiming to raise at least $100,000 by the end of November to send 30 veterans to Outward Bound Canada's Veteran's Program. Many veterans experienced courage, togetherness and a real sense of power and competence when they were in combat. Outward Bound gives them the opportunity to again experience these strengths in a different context, helping transition back to civilian life. Calgary's Canyon Meadows retirement community held railroad days and a raffle earlier this month, raising $300 toward the drive. The Arbour Lake retirement community is holding a silent auction until Friday and an open house at 900 Arbour Lake Rd. N.W. on Friday in support of the project. www.holidaytouch.ca/outwardbound.
