The accused, also of Somali origin, appeared in Hamilton District Court charged with murdering Abdi Awad, 42, who died in Waikato Hospital a short time after being found with serious injuries outside his home in Chamberlain Place, Enderley, late on Tuesday.
The accused man, who also faces a charge of possession of an offensive weapon, showed little emotion as he was granted interim name suppression. He reappears on November 29.
A post-mortem examination revealed Mr Awad died from blood loss from puncture wounds.
Detective Senior Sergeant Karl Thornton said police were aided in their search for the arrested man by the community and local Muslim leaders.
"There is still considerable work to be done on the inquiry but we are very grateful for the level of cooperation we have received at this point," Det Sen Sgt Thornton said.
