Call for Papers 2011 Conference

The 3rd Annual Somali Diaspora Youth (SDY) Conference 2011

Reaching Out to Reduce Youth Risk Factors

Saturday July 16 & Sunday July 17, 2011

The Somali Diaspora Youth (SDY) Conference Committee would like to extend an invitation to, among others, sociologists, historians, political scientists, IT & engineering professionals, health care/public health professionals, economists, educators, activists, and civil society professional who are youth; who specialize and/or work with Somali Diaspora youth, to submit papers and workshop topics to be presented at the July 16-17, 2011 SDY conference in Boston, MA.

The theme for the 2011- SDY Conference is Reaching out to Reduce Youth Risk Factors. This will be addressed through the following five core sub-themes and/or streams.

  1. Integration without assimilation: being American and Somali
  2. Inter-generational communication breakdown
  3. Reflecting on the negative emotional impact of the continues Somali conflict and the humanitarian catastrophe on the youth and their families in the Diaspora
  4. Youth at risk (prostitution, radicalization, incarceration)
  5. Addressing the negative impact of community’s divisions on the basis of clanism and religious sectarianism and the impact they have on youth

Please note that SDY is volunteer-based community initiative. As such, we will not be able to assist any one with travel and lodging expenses. All sessions would be recorded and videos would be posted on SDY website, YouTube, and via other media.

Our annual conference will be held on July 16-17, 2011 at ISBCC, on 100 Malcolm X Blvd.

Please, submit your abstract (no more than 300 words) by June 10, 2011, and your full paper by July 2, 2011. All papers can be to;
