A terror alert was sounded over Eton College this week after it was revealed the top people's school was a potential target for an Al-Qaeda bomb attack.

The historic college is understood to be on a hit-list of possible targets recovered when one of the terror group's leaders, Fazul Abdullah Mohammed, was killed last week in the Somali capital, Mogadishu.

UK security chiefs are reported to have held a top-level summit with government ministers and anti-terror police on Wednesday to discuss the list, which a source at the Home Office said included Eton College.

Officially, however, the  Home Office would confirm only that there was a list of UK locations and refused to comment on particular targets for security reasons.

A spokesman said: "The threat from terrorism remains serious and the first duty of this government is to protect national security and public safety.

"The threat level to the UK remains at 'severe', which means an attack is highly likely."

A spokeswoman for Eton College said it would not discuss any security issues with the press.

The news comes on the back of a warning by police that extremists could be undertaking 'preparatory surveillance' in the area in advance of next year's Olympic games at Dorney Lake.

A Scotland Yard spokesman also refused to comment on specific targets but urged people to remain vigilant for any terrorist-related activity.

Call the anti-terrorist hotline on 0800 789321 if you see anything suspicious.
