A letter from the EPS dated February 11th, 2011, to Mr. Abdul Hussein of the Somaliland Cultural Association of Edmonton and Mr. Mohamed Abdi of the Somali-Canadian Cultural Society of Edmonton.

Dear Sirs,

Re: Letter of Concern Regarding Detective Bill Clark’s Comments to Media

Thank you for bringing forward your concerns to the Edmonton Police Service regarding comments made by one of our members to the media.

I have discussed these concerns with members of the EPS Homicide Section, and it is clear that the EPS and the Somali community share the same interest in solving this case. Unfortunately, we did not communicate this effectively at the outset and frustration was expressed instead.

The comments made about the investigations by one of our sworn members were never meant to damage the reputation of the Somali community and should have been clarified. We regret the effect that any of these comments may have had, and I apologize for the distress this has caused the Somali community. I want to reassure the community that this homicide case and all other cases are being fully investigated.

Moving forward, we recognize that this is not a “Somali” homicide, but an Edmonton homicide. We also recognize the cohesion, strength and pride of the Somali community and their continuing contributions to the city. 

Please continue to work through Superintendent Brad Ward, as his knowledge of police affairs and community initiatives will help us keep the lines of communication open between the Edmonton Police Service and the greater Somali community.
