The United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, has said Somali pirates should be offered alternative ways of earning a living, including the rehabilitation of fishing along the country's coast.

Speaking at the headquarters of the International Maritime Organisation in London, Mr Ban said piracy was driven by economic hardship and flourished in the absence of effective law enforcement.

He said despite the deployment of an international naval force in the region the number of hijackings had risen significantly.
