Somali Women Requests UN to Participate in Nairobi Conference

Somali women have requested the United Nations to allow them to take part in the forth coming UN organized Somali Conference due in Nairobi later this month.

At a meeting in Garowe, the capital of the autonomous Somali region of Puntland, Somali women from different regions of the country and the Somali Diaspora, have asked the international community to involve them in the search for peace in their motherland.

They also asked the Transitional Federal Government to bring to an end the frequent bickering and disputes between its most senior leaders which they said had rendered it not to take  control of the whole country.

'' The Puntland State President promised us that he would submit our request to the UN envoy to Somalia, Ambassador Augustine Mahiga so that we can attend the Nairobi Conference'', said Somali minister of state for Women and Social Affairs,Asha Geele, speaking to the media at the end of the meeting in Garowe,Puntland.

Women from across Somalia Somalia said that they would soon begin a general campaign to show their displeasure  and agitation at the continued conflict in their country.

Somali women at the meeting made several resolutions including the need to support the peace process and to prevent anything that may cause further polarization among the Somali people.

Finally, the Puntland State ministry of women and Family Affairs, said that Somali women would hold regular meetings like this in the future and expresses its support for the upcoming Somali Conference in Nairobi.
