Mogadishu, 24 Sept. (AKI) - Ugandan troops from the African Union in Somalia have advanced against armed militants in the outskirts of Mogadishu, the capital of the war-torn east African country, according to Arab newspaper al-Hayat.
Twenty people were killed and more than 70 injured during fighting near the massive Bakara market on Thursday, according to the report. The market is considered an a stronghold of Al-Shabab, the Al-Qaeda-linked group.
Ugandan troops gained ground during house-to-house fighting and managed to occupy an entire neighbourhood south of the capital.
The fighting had been very slow for the African troops. Over the last three weeks the Ugandan-led force had managed to take over only twenty houses, in the rebel-controlled area south of Mogadishu.
